The house

Built for the long weekend that turns into a week

Maloneys is one of those places that never quite got developed. No shops, no surf club, no through traffic — just a crescent of sand, spotted gums, and a handful of streets where the kangaroos graze on the front lawn at dusk.

The house takes nine across three bedrooms, which in practice means one extended family or two families with kids rather than three couples. There's a carport and a driveway with room for two cars and the trailer. Everything you'd want in the kitchen is already there, dishwasher included — which matters rather a lot when there are nine of you.

There are two long tables, each seating eight — one inside under the raked ceiling, one out on the deck. Most nights everyone ends up at the outside one.

Out the back there's also a fire pit, a multi-level charcoal smoker and an electric grill, and enough lawn for a game of cricket. Bring a brisket.

The garage is set up as a proper gym — squat rack, Olympic bar and plates, kettlebells, bench and a bike — with a dartboard, a second fridge and somewhere to stand the boards.

We stock the house ourselves rather than leaving it to a management company — proper soap and shampoo in the bathrooms, coffee beans in the kitchen, and enough for breakfast on the first morning so you don't have to shop before you've unpacked.

Abbey and Dan look after it themselves. If something isn't right, you're messaging the people who own it.

The main bedroom with a king bed

Sleeping nine

Three bedrooms, honestly described

  • Main bedroom One king 2
  • Second bedroom One queen 2
  • Kids' room Three beds — two doubles and a single 5

Read the kids' room carefully. It has three beds, not five: two doubles and a single. Getting nine people into this house means two children sharing each double. If everyone needs a bed to themselves, the house sleeps seven. It's the one thing worth checking before you book, and we'd rather you knew now than on the first night.

Two showers and two toilets. A main bathroom with a bath and a shower over it, a separate toilet of its own, and a second shower and toilet off the laundry — which is the one that gets used when everyone comes back sandy at once.

Travelling with a baby? There are portacots, a highchair, a bouncer and a change table here already. That's four things you don't have to fit in the car.

Which is why the layout suits one extended family, or two families with children, rather than three couples travelling together.

Dogs

Your dog is genuinely welcome, and there's somewhere to take them

Not "small dogs considered". Dogs are part of why people come here, and Maloneys is one of the better stretches of the South Coast for them — as long as you know which end of the sand is which.

The whole property is dog-proof — front and back yards connect, the front is fully contained, and there's colorbond down both sides and across the back. Our own dog has been coming here for two years and has never once got out. Off the lead from the moment you open the car door.

There are treats in the kitchen and a box of toys in the garden, because we keep them there for our own dog and there's no sense putting them away.

5 min walk

Maloneys Beach

Dogs are allowed from the centre access heading west. The eastern stretch towards the national park is off limits, so walk left from the access, not right.

5 min drive

Long Beach

West of the Bay Road car park is off-leash. The long flat option when you want them to properly run.

No dogs

Murramarang National Park

Dogs are not permitted anywhere in the park, including the beaches inside it. Worth planning around if you're heading north to Pebbly or Depot.

What people actually do here

Everything below is a real distance or a real time. Batemans Bay has the supermarkets, the chemist and the hospital; the rest is coast and forest.

1.5 km return · 30 min–1 hr

Acheron Ledge

Starts at the Maloneys Beach picnic area and climbs to the headland. Grade 3, so decent shoes. One of the better land-based whale lookouts on this stretch.

Aug–Nov · peak Sep–Nov

Whales, from the shore

The southern migration passes close in. Burrewarra Point, the south head at Malua Bay, Bar Rock and Acheron Ledge are the four lookouts worth the drive.

Getting here from Canberra

Kings Highway the whole way, then north through Batehaven and over the bridge. Sydney is 278 km, about 3.5 hours down the coast.

Maloneys Beach is unpatrolled — there are no flags and no lifeguards at any time of year. The nearest patrolled beaches in season are Malua Bay and Broulee.

Payment and cancellation

To book
Paid in full when you book. Your dates are confirmed straight away, and there is nothing more to pay later.
Cleaning
$275 for the changeover clean and all the linen, charged once per stay. A two-night stay and a two-week stay pay the same.
Cancelling early
Cancel more than 60 days before arrival for peak dates, or more than 30 days for everything else, and we refund half of what you paid.
Cancelling late
Cancel later than that and there's no refund, unless we manage to re-let the dates, in which case we refund whatever we recover, less any costs. We'll always try.
Paying
By card on this page. Payments are handled by Stripe, so we never see your card details.
Dogs
Tell us how many when you book. They stay free, but undeclared dogs are a problem.
Security cameras
Three cameras cover the entrances to the house, for security. There are none in the garden or the yard, and none anywhere inside. They are there to keep the house safe, not to watch you.

Plans change and we'd rather you were covered: travel insurance is worth the twenty dollars on a stay this size.
